NIBGE has launched biofertilizers with the commercial name of BioPower in 1996. BioPower is being produced and marketed for various leguminous (fodder & grain legumes) and non-leguminous crops, like cotton, maize, rice, sugarcane & wheat. NIBGE with time has developed all necessary expertise and the infrastructure to undertake the biofertilizer production. The production technology developed is notable because of the large and high quality fermentation quality, totally integrated production process, automatic mixing, filling and packaging system, experienced personnel in all phases of production. The pilot project has been so designed with a view to upscale the fertilizers production as per required.

Impact: The use of biofertilizer can significantly increase the crop yield in the country. For example, rice is grown in about two million hectares in Pakistan and most of the farmers reported 500 kg (or more) increase in paddy yield per hectare by using BioPower that costs only Rs. 360 per hectare. Thus even if we consider the minimum increase of 500 kg per hectare due to biofertilizer application, an additional one thousand million kg of paddy, worth over Pak. Rs. 2 billion can be produced with the use of biofertilizers. Similarly, the increase in the yield of other crops such as wheat and legumes will also have a great impact on the economy of the country. The use of BioPower will minimize the dependence on the chemical fertilizers and
save renewable energy resources. Pakistan for example, stands to gain a net saving of over Rs. 10 billion annually if we meet only 10 percent fertilizer requirements through biofertilizers in rice crop. Therefore, returns on the investment in this technology are quite well proven.
The current capacity of BioPower production at NIBGE is 10,000/- BioPower bags per month (inclusive foe all crops). The product range and area of introduction to the farmers have been extended to all the provinces of Pakistan, i.e., Punjab, Sindh, Baluchistan, Kyber-Pakhtoonkhwa and Azad Jammu & Kashmir. Trainings & workshops are organized for farmers and BioPower distributors to acquaint them with the technological aspects of the product and its use in various crops.

For popularizing Biofertilizers among the farmers, NIBGE is looking forward to tie up with interested entrepreneurs for transfer of production technology and proper training at their production site. These achievements show the institute’s multi-dimensional role and the practical benefits that can be derived even by other developing countries.
